Update on St John's (February 2009)
We did it! Or rather – you did it. With your help we reached our target of £50,000 in December and our very grateful thanks go to everybody who has supported us. We had donations from individuals and from groups, from ex-Accringtonians now living abroad and from children. People held raffles and concerts, donated their birthday money and held sporting events. Their generosity has been amazing.
The service of Nine Lessons and Carols was extremely well-attended and we received many appreciative comments from many people. It was lovely to be back in the building and the walls really didn’t look too bad in the candlelight. The choir were in great voice and we are very grateful to Peter for his dedication and hard work.
There is a lot of work to do on the church before we can move back in. At the time of writing, this has been put out to tender and we are awaiting the replies from the various contractors. We will then have to have everything agreed by English Heritage. If everything goes according to plan, we hope to be back in church in the early autumn.

New Pals’ CD - A Pals song that will make you cry
Irish musician Ephy Clarke, who lives in Oswaldtwistle, has released a CD to commemorate the Accrington Pals.
He has taken the incredible story of the legendary Pals and, using his amazing song writing skills, has woven their story into a beautiful and moving song.
Ephy has produced these CD’s at his own expense, the proceeds of which will go towards our Aspire campaign.
(There are only 500 copies of the CD available and pre-orders have already been taken, so don’t leave it too long to obtain your copy!)
The CD’s are on sale for a minimum donation of £5 and can be purchased from the following outlets: Observer Offices at 103 Blackburn Road, Oswaldtwistle Mills, Accrington Stanley and Blackburn Rovers.
They will also be available for purchase after the 9.30am (St. John’s) Sunday service at St. Christopher’s and from Ephy’s own website. www.ephyclarke.co.uk |
Local historian and book-seller Bob Dobson has donated two of his books, Accrington’s Changing Face, and Huncoat Uncoated to sell in aid of the appeal. |
Pals’ CD – The disc entitled On a Summer’s Morning in France, includes music, readings and extracts from soldiers’ letters.
It was compiled by local historians Les Bond and Nick Caffrey, and in support of the appeal they have kindly donated a number of CD’s for sale. These can be obtained from the Observer Offices at 103 Blackburn Road, Accrington, priced at £8. |
If you would like to give a donation towards the appeal: Please call in at the Observer Offices, 103 Blackburn Road,
